The longstanding issue of clinician burnout is facilitated by the clinical workplace, not by a lack of personal resilience within clinicians. Burnout is the internal manifestation of dysfunction in the clinical workplace, experienced by an individual. Over the past two decades, physician burnout has been steadily increasing, with a recent exacerbation due to the pandemic. This has had significant negative consequences for individual physicians and the organizations within which they work. Despite increasing awareness and concern accompanied by efforts to improve physician resiliency, little progress has been made.

It is possible to improve physician wellness and enhance professional fulfillment in a context where leaders understand the drivers of burnout in clinical settings and take the lead in an organizational approach to mitigate those drivers.

During this two-day course, you will learn about the drivers of burnout, how they became so significant in the clinical workplace, and how they relate to the manifestations of burnout. Building on the Stanford WellMD model of professional fulfillment and the AMA Joy In Medicine Recognition Program framework, you will be able to assess the current status of wellbeing efforts in your organization and design a plan that can serve as a template for driving meaningful improvement in physician wellness and professional fulfillment in your organization.
