Self-Awareness and Trust: Leading Healthcare Teams from the Inside Out
Description
You trained for years to become a clinician. You learned to diagnose and treat patients, to perform under pressure, and to make decisions when the margin for error was zero. Nobody taught you how to lead people.
The assumption — unstated but pervasive — is that physicians already know how to lead. They can hold authority without losing trust, navigate a team fracturing under chronic stress, and stay grounded in their values when it matters most. For most of us, leading did not come naturally. And yet every day, clinicians are asked to navigate conflict, rebuild trust, deliver difficult feedback, and hold teams together under pressure — without training, mentorship, or a roadmap.
Self-Awareness and Trust: Leading Healthcare Teams from the Inside Out is the leadership book that medicine and military training never provided. Drawing on more than two decades of experience as a critical care physician, Army colonel, psychiatrist, and executive coach — and shaped by deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, a career in academic medicine, and her own journey through three cancers — Jess Bunin, MD, makes the case that clinical competence alone cannot carry you through the human reality of leadership. What you need are the inner and relational tools that transform a skilled practitioner into a leader people want to follow.
The book is organized into three parts that build on one another.
Part One develops the inner work: self-awareness, values, bias, perfectionism, and the self-compassion that makes sustainable leadership possible.
Part Two turns outward into the relational discipline of leadership: how trust is built, how it breaks, and how it is repaired — conversation by conversation.
Part Three looks forward, equipping leaders to build cultures of psychological safety, civil discourse, and sustainable purpose in a polarized and rapidly evolving healthcare system.
The frameworks here are practical. The stories are real. And the central argument is both honest and hopeful: becoming a better leader is not about becoming a different person. It is about becoming more fully yourself.
"I believe this book will strengthen not only the physicians who read it, but also the profession they have chosen to serve. There are many accomplished physicians. There are fewer accomplished physician leaders. With this book, Dr. Jess Bunin is helping close that gap" says LTG (Ret.) Mark Hertling, DBA, who wrote the Foreword for the book.
