William "Marty" Martin, MA, MS, MPH, PsyD, CHES is a highly sought-after presenter, strategic planning facilitator, and coach in the United States and abroad. His topics range from managing physician performance to elements of teamwork. Martin currently serves as director and professor of the health sector management MBA program at DePaul University in Chicago. In this role, he launched three innovative programs: a dual MBA/MS degree with Rush University, a healthcare concentration in the MS in predictive analytics, and an MS in health informatics.
Martin has authored more than 100 refereed articles in journals ranging from the Journal of Health Care Finance to the International Journal of Computer Science and Technology. His scholarly and consulting work has been featured in articles in the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and USA Today. He has also written two books: The Inner World of Money: Taking Control of Your Financial Decisions and Behaviors (2012) and Taming Disruptive Behavior, published by the American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL), which he co-authored with Philip Hemphill. His third book, Conquer Needle Phobia: Simple Ways to Reduce Your Anxiety and Fear, will be released in 2021.
Before joining the DePaul faculty, Martin practiced clinical psychology in primary healthcare settings. He continues to practice behavioral sleep medicine as a licensed clinical psychologist. He also has served in key leadership positions at DePaul, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and Tulane University Hospital and Clinics. His coaching practice focuses on career transitions for physician leaders, productivity enhancement for physician leaders, and startup advising for physician leaders. He draws on his expertise in senior HR leadership positions and his knowledge of sports and performance psychology. He was recently selected as a Coleman Entrepreneurship faculty fellow to continue his work on healthcare innovation and entrepreneurship.
Dr. Philip Hemphill, PhD, LCSW is a thought leader in the behavioral health and addictive service industry. As a full-time professor of practice in the Tulane School of Social Work, he teaches and supervises the next generation of professional social workers. He writes and publishes academic research and is currently completing his second book, The Integrated Care Shift: Addiction Treatment and Beyond with Routledge Press, which will be released in 2021. His first book, which he co-authored with Marty Martin, is Taming Disruptive Behavior, published by the American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) Currently, he is the chief clinical officer of BasePoint Health Management.
From 2015 to 2018, Hemphill served as the chief clinical officer of a premier addiction treatment facility where he was responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, and directing all the company’s behavioral health and addictive services. Prior to that (2003–2015), Hemphill was a consultant and the director of the Professional Enhancement Program (PEP) at Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services, where he was responsible for the management and clinical supervision of professional patients in an intensive outpatient/residential setting, During those 12 years, Hemphill moved throughout the system of care as consultant, manager, leadership coach, and strategic planner. He developed and executed program deliverables such as program design, 360 degree monitoring, professional evaluation, fitness for duty recommendations, staff training and supervision, vocational and professional reintegration, workplace monitoring, staff development, coaching, and administrative management of the program.
He is an assistant clinical lecturer at LSU Health Sciences, Department of Psychiatry, and has held faculty appointments at Jacksonville University and Loyola University. He received his master’s and doctoral degrees from Tulane University.
