Abstract
This article explores the use of team-building questions as a strategy to increase employee engagement. It defines team-building questions (as opposed to shallower icebreaker questions) and describes the benefits of using them as a team-building tool. It then suggests that the success of team-building questions relies on reciprocal sharing. It considers five factors that impede an employee’s willingness to share and offers five strategies for overcoming them. This article then turns to practical matters, such as how and when to use team-building questions, how to introduce team-building questions to reluctant teams, and how to facilitate meaningful discussions. It provides readers with 150 team-building questions organized into five categories and equips them with a nine-point strategy for bringing meandering discussions back on track.
