Abstract
The evolving landscape of physician employment, marked by a shift toward larger health systems, underscores the critical need for resident physicians to grasp the business aspects of medicine, particularly in contract negotiation. Research shows that educational initiatives enhance residents’ confidence and knowledge in this area. However, widespread naivete among residents highlights the systemic nature of the issue, necessitating standardized practice management education. As the healthcare environment increasingly leans toward employment-based models, new attending physicians often face diminished negotiating leverage because of limited contract negotiation experience. To address this imbalance and its potential long-term consequences, prioritizing education in practice management and contract negotiation for resident physicians is crucial, ensuring their success and well-being in the competitive healthcare landscape.
