Abstract

In healthcare organizations, physician executives face the complex challenge of balancing performance metrics with the ethical and patient-centered care mandated by the Hippocratic Oath. The reliance on metrics such as readmissions, patient satisfaction, and efficiency can lead to unintended consequences, including the risk of overemphasizing quantifiable targets, which can distort true healthcare goals and patient outcomes. Effective physician leadership requires the integration of several principles to ensure that performance measurements enhance rather than compromise the quality of care. By fostering a culture of transparency, accountability, and patient-centered care, healthcare organizations can align their operational goals with the mission of improving patient health and well-being.
